 One of our artists-Devora Alexander
Devora Alexander, originally from Ireland and now living in Israel, began designing and creating unique, popular, and unusually beautiful candles for Safed Candles in 1994. From Tapers and Pillars to Frogs and Smileys, each piece is hand-made out of natural or multicolored beeswax or paraffin wax. Since every piece is hand made, NO molds are used, therefore each piece is different than the other. Devorah has fashioned thousands of candles.
When asked how all of her previous art education has affected her working with wax at Safed Candles, she responds:
“Learning different materials like pottery, fabrics, and paints, and now, wax, has helped me to become very aware of the nature of different materials. It’s a little hard to explain but we all know that ‘there’s nothing new under the sun’, only Hashem creates something from nothing, but my aspiration is to create something new from wax. As the artist, I’m making something from something, yet I’m searching for the potential within the wax – how it flows when liquid, how it forms once solid, and with that in mind, the creativity, which is a gift from G-d, flows and forms too.”
